Spider-Man 2 by Marvel is the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game ever. Within 24 hours of its release on Friday, October 20, the Insomniac Games title sold 2.5 million copies worldwide.
The achievement is all the more impressive given that Spider-Man 2 is a PlayStation 5 exclusive, not available on any other console. It was Sony’s first game that was exclusive to the PS5 and not compatible with the PS4. The recognition of Puerto Rican culture in Spider-Man 2 has been praised, but there has been criticism after its flag was confused with that of Cuba in the leading character’s house.
Technology News UK has learned that Sony announced that the 2.5 million figure includes pre-orders that may or may not have been shipped or have yet to arrive to their owners. Given that around 40 million PS5 consoles have been sold, the number of Spider-Man 2 sales is still quite impressive.
“With two playable Super Heroes, an aesthetically stunning Marvel’s New York, an epic storyline, and so much more,” stated Eric Lempel, SVP of Global Marketing, Sales, and Business Operations at Sony. “On behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment, I’d like to thank the fans – we sincerely hope you’re having fun playing as Peter and Miles in this amazing adventure.”
