From today, Twitter will permit cannabis advertisements on the service, the firm revealed in a blog (per Axios). The business previously permitted topical CBD adverts that were directed at some US users. As a result of the policy change, Twitter will now permit more cannabis advertisements than other platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, where big advertising agencies had previously advised clients against buying ads in the wake of Elon Musk’s takeover.
THC and CBD products are not allowed, although advertisers may market hemp products on platforms owned by Meta with restrictions on regional targeting and content. TikTok has equally strong policies regarding narcotics, refusing to even accept public service ads from New York after the state legalised cannabis for adults.
According to the company’s blog, Twitter will now permit marketers to promote brand preference and educational cannabis-related material for CBD, THC, and cannabis-related goods and services.
Advertisers for cannabis products on Twitter will still need to follow certain rules to market their goods. Twitter must first authorise advertisers before they may target users in states where they are permitted to advertise cannabis-related goods and services. The sale of cannabis cannot be promoted in commercials, with a few exceptions for topical CBD products.
Marketers won’t be permitted to pitch to or target consumers under the age of 21 reported by Technology News UK. Also, Twitter states that advertisements cannot show cannabis usage or make efficacy or health claims.
