Meta has entered into a licensing deal with Midjourney to integrate the startup’s AI image and video generation technology, Meta Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang announced Friday in a Threads post. According to Wang, Meta’s research teams will work closely with Midjourney to bring its capabilities into future AI models and consumer products. Reports Technology News
“To deliver the best possible products for people, we need an all-of-the-above strategy,” Wang wrote. “That means world-class talent, a bold compute roadmap, and collaboration with the best players across the industry.”
The partnership could strengthen Meta’s hand in competing with leading AI image and video models such as OpenAI’s Sora, Google’s Veo, and Flux from Black Forest Labs. Meta has already introduced its own AI tools, including the Imagine image generator—now embedded across Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger—and Movie Gen, a video generation tool that creates clips from text prompts.
The agreement with Midjourney represents Meta’s latest move to accelerate its AI ambitions. Earlier this year, CEO Mark Zuckerberg ramped up hiring, offering AI researchers packages exceeding $100 million, while also investing $14 billion into Scale AI and acquiring AI voice company Play AI.
Meta has also been in discussions with other AI labs about possible acquisitions. Zuckerberg even held talks with Elon Musk regarding Musk’s $97 billion bid for OpenAI, though Meta ultimately did not join and the offer was rejected by OpenAI.
Although financial details of the Midjourney deal remain undisclosed, CEO David Holz confirmed on X that Midjourney will remain independent and has no outside investors—making it one of the few top AI labs to operate without external funding. Reports from Upstarts Media suggest Meta had previously explored acquiring the company outright.
