Early last year, Holmes, 39, was found guilty of four fraud charges related to her failing blood testing start-up. In the middle of May, the judge turned down her request to remain free on bail while the initial conviction was being appealed. She will serve the remainder of her sentence in a minimum-security prison in Texas.
On Tuesday, Holmes reported to the federal prison in Bryan, Texas, which regularly houses 500–700 prisoners. The distance from there to her hometown of Houston is roughly 100 miles (160 km). The Federal Bureau of Prisons verified her arrival at the jail but declined to provide further information regarding her detention due to privacy considerations. There, the former youngest self-made billionaire in the world might work alongside other prisoners for between 10 cents (12p) and 15 cents (93p), much of which would go towards her court-ordered restitution payments, reports Technology News UK.
A US judge ordered Holmes and her ex-husband, former Theranos CEO Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, to pay victims $452 million earlier this month. Balwani already has a 13-year prison sentence in California for his involvement in the fraud.
