Apple’s long-anticipated overhaul of Siri could transform the assistant into a chatbot closer in style to ChatGPT, according to a report by Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman. Sources familiar with the plans say the revamped Siri experience would be built into iOS 27 and is expected to take centre stage at Apple’s WWDC event in June.
The new Siri, internally codenamed “Campos”, is said to support both voice and text interactions. Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, Craig Federighi, had previously played down the idea of turning Siri into a chatbot, instead emphasising AI features that are seamlessly embedded and readily available. However, growing competition and the rapid adoption of rival AI chatbots appear to have prompted a shift in strategy.
Apple may also be feeling mounting pressure as OpenAI prepares to move into hardware, a venture reportedly led by former Apple design chief Jony Ive.
The company has widely been viewed as trailing competitors in the AI race. Apple delayed the launch of a more personalised version of Siri several times and spent much of last year exploring potential partnerships, testing technologies from rivals including OpenAI and Anthropic. Ultimately, Apple opted to work with Google, confirming earlier this month that Gemini will serve as its AI partner.
