Meta unveiled its latest smart glasses on Wednesday, doubling down on its bet that everyday life will increasingly merge physical and virtual experiences—even as the strategy continues to rack up heavy financial losses.

The highlight of the announcements was the launch of the Meta Ray-Ban Display smart glasses, equipped with built-in screens that let users view messages, photos, and more as if they were glancing at a smartphone display.

Touted as Meta’s most advanced AI-powered eyewear to date, the Ray-Ban Display is paired with sensor-rich bracelets known as neural bands. These allow wearers to control the glasses through subtle finger movements. The new device is set to hit the market at a starting price of $799.

“Our goal is to build great-looking glasses that deliver personal superintelligence and a feeling of presence using realistic holograms,” Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said as he showed off new AI glasses at the tech firm’s annual developers conference.

“These ideas combined are what we call the metaverse.”

Zuckerberg has predicted that AI-infused smart glasses will be the “next major computing platform,” eventually replacing the smartphone.
