After years of speculation, rumors, and excitement, Sony has officially announced the launch of a more powerful – and significantly pricier – version of its popular PlayStation 5 console. However, this upgraded performance comes at a premium. The PS5 Pro will be Sony’s most expensive console yet, retailing at £699.99 when it hits the market on November 7. This marks a considerable price increase compared to the original PS5.

Industry analyst Piers Harding-Rolls from research firm Ampere noted, “The price point of the PS5 Pro is sure to spark plenty of debate.” He believes Sony is betting that the console’s improved capabilities will entice gamers to upgrade their current systems and invest more in additional software.

Mark Cerny, the lead architect behind the PS5, called it “the most powerful console we’ve ever built,” explaining that the PS5 Pro addresses a long-standing challenge for gamers: the choice between “fidelity mode,” which prioritizes visual quality, and “performance mode,” which makes gameplay smoother but sacrifices some visual detail. The new console aims to minimize that compromise, offering players the best of both worlds.

Christopher Dring, head of GamesIndustry.biz, told the BBC that the PS5 Pro is designed for PlayStation’s “most enthusiastic audience,” describing it as “a very targeted console.” He added that while the gaming industry has faced declining sales for the PS5, Xbox Series S and X, and the aging Nintendo Switch this year, the PS5 Pro is unlikely to reverse that trend.

However, Dring suggested that Sony may be looking ahead to capitalize on one of the most eagerly awaited games in the world – Grand Theft Auto VI, set for release next year.

“When GTA 6 does launch, PlayStation will be able to say to players that the game will look best on PS5 Pro,” he said.
