Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has urged staff to embrace artificial intelligence (AI), while warning that the technology is set to reduce the company’s corporate workforce in the near future. Reports Technology News
In a memo to employees on Tuesday, Jassy encouraged staff to “be curious about AI” and highlighted its growing role within the company. He said the shift towards AI would bring about “efficiency gains,” ultimately meaning fewer people will be needed for certain roles.
“We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs,” he wrote. “It’s hard to know exactly where this nets out over time, but in the next few years, we expect that this will reduce our total corporate workforce as we get efficiency gains from using AI extensively across the company.”
Amazon’s comments come as tech giants globally continue to unveil their AI strategies, amid growing concerns that the rapid rise of AI could lead to widespread job losses—particularly in entry-level roles.
Dario Amodei, CEO of AI startup Anthropic, warned last month that AI could eliminate half of all entry-level white-collar jobs. Geoffrey Hinton, often referred to as the “Godfather of AI” for his pioneering work at Google and beyond, recently echoed similar concerns during a podcast appearance.
Across the tech industry, companies are ramping up investment in AI tools, driven by breakthroughs that have made it easier for AI to generate code, images, and text with minimal input—raising both excitement and alarm about what the future holds for traditional office jobs.
