Spotify has introduced a new AI-powered conversational feature that allows Premium subscribers to interact with the app using natural language to discover music, podcasts and audiobooks more easily.
The feature is launching in beta for Premium users aged 18 and over across iOS and Android devices in the United States, Ireland and Sweden, with English-language support available at launch.
Spotify said the new experience enables users to have interactive conversations with the app by typing or speaking naturally to receive personalised recommendations and control what they want to listen to.
The company confirmed that the feature is powered by a combination of Spotify’s own artificial intelligence technology and models from multiple AI providers, selecting the most suitable system for each task.
The launch builds on Spotify’s growing portfolio of AI-powered tools, including AI DJ, AI-generated playlists and integrations with third-party AI assistants such as ChatGPT.
Unlike the AI DJ feature, the new conversational assistant works throughout the Spotify app, allowing users to chat directly from the Home and Now Playing screens on mobile devices.
Users can ask Spotify for personalised music recommendations, discover new artists, explore podcasts and audiobooks, or learn more about songs, albums and artists based on their listening habits.
The AI assistant can also answer questions about a user’s listening history, such as when they first played a particular track, identify frequently streamed genres and recommend similar artists based on previous activity.
Spotify said users can refine recommendations through follow-up questions, request more upbeat or recent music, ask to include specific artists and continuously personalise suggestions during the conversation.
In addition to music discovery, the AI feature can perform actions such as saving songs, adding tracks to the playback queue and following artists directly through the conversational interface.
