After delving into Mixed-Reality headsets, Apple now appears to be shifting focus toward developing smart glasses similar to the Meta Ray-Bans. According to a new report, the Cupertino-based company is “ramping up work on the glasses” and could have working prototypes ready by the end of the year. Reports Technology News

The update comes from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who, citing sources familiar with the project, says Apple is aiming to launch its Meta Ray-Ban rival “by the end of next year” as part of a broader initiative to push AI-powered consumer devices.

Much like Meta’s rumoured smart glasses codenamed Hypernova, Apple’s version is expected to include a built-in camera, multiple microphones, and speakers. These components would enable the glasses to interpret the surrounding environment and respond to voice commands through Siri. Potential features may include the ability to make phone calls, control music, provide navigation directions, and even translate conversations in real time.

Internally, the project is reportedly codenamed N50, but has recently been grouped under a broader effort referred to as N401, which could indicate Apple is exploring a wider range of similar products. Still, given Apple’s history of quietly shelving experimental devices, there’s always a chance the glasses may never see the light of day.

Gurman also notes that Apple had been working on integrating cameras into the Apple Watch and Apple Watch Ultra with a target launch year of 2027, but that effort was discontinued just this week. In a surprising twist, he adds that the company is continuing to develop AirPods equipped with cameras.
