Earlier today, Shopify experienced a significant outage that disrupted operations for thousands of merchants, leaving many unable to process transactions during one of the busiest shopping days of the year.
According to the company’s status page, Shopify has now identified and resolved the issue.
The timing couldn’t have been worse, as customers were actively hunting for Cyber Monday deals—an event that drives massive spikes in online traffic. Shopify, one of the leading e-commerce platforms globally, powers millions of online stores and accounts for more than 10% of all e-commerce transactions in the U.S.
Reports of trouble began around 6:45 a.m. PT, when merchants started encountering login issues across their Shopify dashboards. Many also faced outages with Shopify’s point-of-sale (POS) systems, which in some cases completely blocked in-store and online transactions.
Shopify later confirmed that the root cause was linked to its login authentication flow, explaining the widespread POS access failures. The company says systems are now recovering, though it will continue to monitor performance. It also warned that response times in its Help Center may be slower than usual due to increased support requests following the outage.
While the total number of impacted merchants remains unknown, Downdetector—an online platform that tracks user-reported issues—recorded roughly 4,000 outage reports during the peak of the incident.
