The site, popular for hosting and sharing memes and other images on platforms like Reddit and online forums, is no longer available to UK visitors.

On Tuesday, users attempting to reach Imgur were met with a message reading, “content not available in your region”. The block also affects Imgur content embedded on other websites, which no longer displays for UK audiences.

The UK’s data regulator, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), said it had recently issued Imgur’s parent company, MediaLab AI, with notice of plans to fine the firm following an investigation into its handling of children’s personal data and approach to age verification.

A support article on Imgur’s US website confirmed that “from September 30, 2025, access to Imgur from the United Kingdom is no longer available”. It added: “UK users will not be able to log in, view content, or upload images. Imgur content embedded on third-party sites will not display for UK users.”

The ICO opened its probe into Imgur in March, examining whether the company was complying with UK data protection laws and the children’s code. These rules require online services to safeguard children and limit the amount of data collected from them.

At the time, the regulator noted that Imgur did not request users to confirm their age when creating accounts.

On 10 September, the ICO issued MediaLab with a notice of intent to impose a financial penalty after reaching its provisional findings.

“Our findings are provisional and the ICO will carefully consider any representations from MediaLab before taking a final decision whether to issue a monetary penalty,” said Tim Capel, interim executive director at the ICO.

He stressed that leaving the UK market would not shield a company from accountability: “We have been clear that exiting the UK does not allow an organisation to avoid responsibility for any prior infringement of data protection law, and our investigation remains ongoing.”

The ICO declined to provide further details on its findings or the potential fine, saying only: “This update has been provided to give clarity on our investigation, and we will not be providing any further detail at this time.”
