Google is rolling out its AI-powered search feature in the UK, marking a major shift that could challenge the dominance of traditional search as we know it. Reports Technology News
Unlike the standard search engine, the new AI tool allows users to ask complex or multi-layered questions and receive responses generated by artificial intelligence. According to Google, the tool is designed to provide more comprehensive answers to lengthier queries, while also helping users navigate and organise online information more effectively.
However, the tech giant’s track record with similar features has drawn mixed reactions. Critics have raised concerns about the impact on web-based businesses and the potential spread of misinformation through AI-generated summaries.
Now launching in the UK, the feature was first introduced in the US in late May and expanded to India earlier this month. Starting Tuesday, UK users will begin to see the new “AI Mode” appear as a tab within the Google Search results page, as well as inside the Google app for both Android and iOS devices. It will roll out fully over the coming days.
The feature builds on Google’s AI Overview, which is already integrated into search results. Hema Budaraju, Google’s vice president of product management for search, told the PA news agency that the update signals a “major shift” in how people interact with search—pointing to an increase in longer and more detailed user questions.
