Google revealed the new NotebookLM update on Monday, highlighting several improvements designed to strengthen the platform’s research capabilities. The company said the tool will now run on Gemini 3.5 by default while also benefiting from Antigravity-powered software capabilities that assist users in conducting research and creating various forms of content.

The latest enhancement reflects Google’s broader strategy of integrating advanced AI and coding capabilities across its products. Similar improvements have already appeared in Google’s search experiences, where AI-powered features are being used to deliver more interactive and informative question-and-answer experiences.

One of the most notable additions is a new chat-driven workflow that helps users build a source repository directly within NotebookLM. By discussing a project with the AI assistant, users can receive recommendations for relevant sources drawn from Google Search and NotebookLM’s research capabilities. This can help uncover primary references in different languages as well as additional material from related experts and authors.

Before this update, users were required to upload or provide their own source materials before NotebookLM could begin analyzing information and generating insights. The new functionality reduces that dependency by allowing the platform to actively assist in discovering useful research content from the beginning of a project.

Google also introduced expanded content-generation controls, enabling users to provide detailed instructions for creating outputs tailored to specific needs. In addition, generated content can now be edited after creation. The platform supports exports across a wide range of formats, including PNG and SVG visualizations, PDF and DOCX documents, Markdown and text files, AI-generated images powered by Nano Banana, structured data formats such as CSV and JSON, and Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint files.

The company noted that these improvements build upon its previously launched Deep Research feature, which was designed to perform structured online research. With the latest rollout, NotebookLM will now display the steps it follows when generating responses, giving users greater visibility into how conclusions are reached and making it easier to verify results.

Google said the new NotebookLM features are available immediately for Google AI Ultra subscribers and Workspace business customers with AI Ultra Access or AI Expanded Access. The company plans to extend availability to additional users in the future as the rollout continues.
