OpenAI is rolling out a new promotion in India, offering its ChatGPT Go plan free for one year to users who sign up during a limited-time window starting November 4. The company announced the offer on Tuesday but did not clarify how long the promotion will run. Current ChatGPT Go subscribers in India will also qualify for the complimentary 12-month plan, OpenAI confirmed.

Originally launched in India in August, ChatGPT Go is OpenAI’s most affordable paid tier, priced at under $5 per month. The plan later expanded to Indonesia and, earlier this month, to 16 more countries across Asia.

India — home to over a billion internet users and more than 700 million smartphone owners — has quickly become a key growth market for OpenAI. The company opened its New Delhi office in August and is actively building a local team to strengthen its footprint in the region.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously noted that India ranks as the company’s second-largest market after the United States. Despite the vast user base, converting that popularity into paid subscriptions has been a challenge. Between May and August, the ChatGPT app recorded over 29 million downloads in India but generated only $3.6 million in in-app purchases, according to Appfigures data cited by TechCrunch.

ChatGPT Go provides users with 10 times the usage limits of the free plan for tasks like generating text, creating images, and uploading files. It also includes enhanced memory capabilities for more personalized interactions, OpenAI said.

“Since initially launching ChatGPT Go in India a few months ago, the adoption and creativity we’ve seen from our users has been inspiring,” said Nick Turley, vice president and head of ChatGPT, in a statement. “We’re excited to see the amazing things our users will build, learn, and achieve with these tools.”
