WhatsApp has begun rolling out username reservations to its 3 billion users, allowing people to secure a unique username before the feature officially launches later this year.
Although usernames are not yet fully active, users can reserve their preferred handle now and begin using it once the feature becomes available globally.
The new username system will allow users to connect on WhatsApp without sharing their phone numbers, providing an additional layer of privacy for personal users and a simpler way for businesses to share their contact details with customers.
To reserve a username, users need to open Settings > Account and select the Username option under the “Your Account” section.
First-time users can tap Create Username, enter their preferred handle and check its availability. If the chosen username has already been taken, WhatsApp will suggest alternative variations that users can select.
WhatsApp has reserved certain usernames for public figures, brands and organisations, preventing other users from claiming them. People who already have matching Facebook or Instagram usernames can also sign in through those services to reserve the same handle on WhatsApp.
Users can edit or delete their username at any time by returning to the Username settings and selecting the Edit option.
WhatsApp is also introducing an additional security feature called a Username Key, allowing users to restrict first-time messages to people who know both their username and a unique four-digit key. The key can be regenerated whenever required for added privacy.
The username feature is expected to launch publicly in the coming weeks. Until then, WhatsApp is allowing users to reserve usernames in advance to prevent duplicate claims when the feature becomes fully available.
