The board of directors of OpenAI announced on Friday that CEO Sam Altman will step down and be replaced on an interim basis by technology head Mira Murati. The organization stated that it carried out “a deliberative review process” and “concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities.”
“The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI,” it stated in a statement. The board of directors of OpenAI comprises head scientist Ilya Sutskever as well as independent members such as Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo, technology entrepreneur Tasha McCauley, and Helen Toner of the Georgetown Center for Security and Emerging Technology. According to OpenAI, the board of directors of the 501(c)(3) is the “overall governing body for all OpenAI activities.”
The board also stated that OpenAI’s president, Greg Brockman, “will be stepping down as chairman of the board and continuing in his role at the company, reporting to the CEO.”

According to OpenAI, the 501(c)(3) board of directors is the “all-around governing body for all OpenAI activities.”
