OpenAI has officially announced that its AI-driven short video creation app, Sora, is now available for Android users. Initially launched during the Sora 2 model reveal in September, the app had previously been exclusive to iPhone users.
The San Francisco-based AI company revealed on Tuesday that the Sora app is now rolling out on the Google Play Store across select regions, including the US, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. However, the app is not yet available in India, and OpenAI has not provided a timeline for when it will reach one of its largest markets.
Since its debut, Sora has seen a remarkable response — it was downloaded over one million times within five days and held the top spot on the App Store charts for nearly three weeks. Even now, the app continues to perform strongly, sitting at fifth place on the Apple App Store, just behind popular apps like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.
How does the Sora app work?
The Sora app lets users generate AI-powered videos of up to 60 seconds using text prompts or images, complete with auto-generated soundtracks powered by the advanced Sora 2 model. The Android version includes all the features from its iOS counterpart — including the fun and creative Cameos feature.
With Cameos, users can create AI videos of themselves performing different actions or even include friends in their AI-generated clips. Additionally, the app offers tools for remixing videos, applying artistic styles, and sharing creations directly to popular social media platforms, making it a versatile hub for creative AI video content.
