As part of a five-year programme, Oxford’s students and faculty will gain access to research grant funding, enterprise-level security, and AI-powered tools designed to enhance teaching, learning, and research. This initiative builds on Oxford’s ongoing commitment to strengthening AI capabilities through its AI & Machine Learning Competency Centre.

Oxford researchers will benefit from access to OpenAI’s latest models, including o1 and 4o, to accelerate their work. Additionally, 3,000 academics and staff will receive access to ChatGPT Edu, a secure academic version of ChatGPT, following the success of a recent pilot scheme.

Through OpenAI’s NextGenAI initiative, research grant funding will be available for Oxford researchers engaged in collaborative projects with OpenAI, fostering innovation at the intersection of AI and academia.

Anne Trefethen, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Digital, University of Oxford, said: “This new collaboration marks an exciting step forward, offering fresh opportunities to enrich our research, expand our AI capabilities, and foster skill development.

“By working together, we can learn from one another, advancing the frontiers of artificial intelligence, understanding its impact on education and unlocking its vast potential for the benefit of our university community and beyond.”
