WhatsApp is rolling out a range of new features, including AI-powered suggested replies and enhanced messaging tools, as it deepens integration with Meta Platforms’ AI ecosystem.
The most notable update is an upgrade to the app’s “Writing Help” feature, which now generates AI-powered reply suggestions based on conversations. Originally launched last August, the tool already allowed users to rephrase, proofread and adjust tone — but the latest update aims to help users craft messages more quickly and naturally.
Meta appears to be positioning the feature as an in-app alternative to tools like ChatGPT, encouraging users to stay within WhatsApp when drafting messages. However, the company acknowledged that not all users may want AI assistance in personal chats, where authenticity often matters more.
WhatsApp said conversations remain private even when using Writing Help. To access the feature, users can tap the chat bar, open the stickers menu, and select the AI-enabled pencil icon.
Beyond messaging, the update introduces new tools to improve storage management. Users can now identify and delete large files directly within chats, allowing them to free up space without removing entire conversations — for example, clearing media while keeping text history intact.
The platform is also adding AI-powered photo editing through Meta AI, enabling users to edit images within chats by removing unwanted elements, changing backgrounds or applying new visual styles.
Additional updates include the ability to transfer chat history between iOS and Android devices, as well as within the same platform. WhatsApp is also introducing support for running two accounts simultaneously on iOS — a feature already available on Android — offering greater flexibility for users managing multiple profiles.
