ChatGPT’s rapid rise as a leading consumer app continues, with the AI chatbot now on track to reach 700 million weekly active users this week, according to OpenAI. Reports Technology News

Nick Turley, OpenAI’s VP and head of the ChatGPT app, shared the milestone on X, noting the platform had previously hit 500 million weekly users by the end of March. He added that ChatGPT usage has grown fourfold compared to last year.

“Every day, people and teams are learning, creating, and solving harder problems. Big week ahead. Grateful to the team for making ChatGPT more useful and delivering on our mission so everyone can benefit from AI,” Turley wrote.

The app’s surge in popularity comes on the heels of major upgrades, including a powerful image generation tool introduced in March, driven by the GPT-4 model. Following its release, OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap revealed that over 130 million users created more than 700 million images in just a few days.

Subscription growth is also on the rise. Last week, Lightcap reported that ChatGPT now has 5 million paying business users, up from 3 million in June.

According to a recent Sensor Tower report, ChatGPT ranks just behind Google and X in terms of user engagement, with users logging in more than 12 days per month on average. In the first half of 2025, the app saw users spending an average of 16 minutes per day, highlighting its increasing role in daily digital routines.
