Perplexity has officially entered the web browser market with the launch of Comet, its first AI-powered browser, unveiled on Wednesday. This bold move underscores the startup’s growing ambition to rival Google Search as the go-to tool for online information discovery. Reports Technology News
Comet is initially rolling out to users on Perplexity’s $200-per-month Max plan, along with a select group of invitees from a waitlist. The browser is built around Perplexity’s AI search engine, which comes pre-installed and set as the default, placing the company’s signature feature — AI-generated summaries of search results — at the forefront of the browsing experience.
A standout addition is the Comet Assistant, an integrated AI agent designed to streamline everyday web tasks. According to Perplexity, the assistant can summarize emails and calendar events, manage browser tabs, and navigate web pages on the user’s behalf. It’s accessible through a sidecar panel that appears on any webpage, allowing the assistant to interpret on-page content and respond to user queries in real time.
While Perplexity has introduced various tools and updates in recent months, Comet feels like a major milestone. CEO Aravind Srinivas has heavily promoted the browser’s debut — a signal of its strategic importance as the company ramps up its challenge to Google’s dominance in the search and browsing space.
