US technology giant Seagate has unveiled plans for a £115m investment at its Londonderry factory, a move set to create around 30 new jobs. Reports Technology News
The funding will support research and development at the Springtown plant on Buncrana Road. First Minister Michelle O’Neill, Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly, and Economy Minister Caoimhe Archibald visited the site on Thursday morning to welcome the announcement.
Opened in 1993, the Derry facility now employs 1,500 staff, making it one of the largest employers in the north west. The new investment package includes £100m from Seagate alongside an additional £15m from Invest NI, with the funding earmarked for R&D over the next five years.
As a leading player in global technology, Seagate said the investment will help “usher in the next generation” of hard drive development. The Springtown site manufactures highly specialised recording heads, a critical component for hard drives used in homes and businesses worldwide.
Vice President Fergus O’Donnell described the move as a commitment to strengthening innovation, saying it would “drive opportunity” by further enhancing the world-class team and facilities at the plant.
