Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg and Linda Yaccarino of X – joining tech bosses sharing concern about children’s mental health and online safety – appear in Washington today. The politicians argue that large tech corporations are not doing enough to ensure the safety of children and prevent their exploitation. Technology News reports that they have fought harder laws while calling on the executives to come and testify about how much they have achieved so far.
The CEOs of TikTok, Discord, and Snap are also invited. It is the actuality that many of the executives, including Ms Yaccarino, have testified in Congress for the very first time. Ms Yaccarino, along with Discord’s chief executive officer Jason Citron and Evan Spiegel – the top ranking member of Snap Inc., was served with a subpoena – a legal order- before agreeing to testify at the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing. The two individuals voluntarily agreed to appear in the House Subcommittee, namely Mr Zuckerberg and TikTok chief executive Shou Zi Chew.
“Parents and children want more action,” said Senators Dick Durbin and Lindsey Graham as they presented their proposals. This hearing has been scheduled after three months when a former senior staff member in Meta told Congress that he believed that Instagram fell far short of protecting teens from sexual harassment. At this point in the announcement, Meta stated that it had introduced more than 30 tools to create a secure Internet environment for adolescents.
